What is Kernel Service?

Kernel Service is a standalone AI agent runtime that orchestrates intelligent agents across business software. It sits between your applications and AI models, handling orchestration, tool execution, policy enforcement, and audit logging.

The Problem

Every business app that wants AI capabilities ends up building the same plumbing:

  • LLM API integration and model selection
  • Tool/function calling orchestration
  • Audit logging and cost tracking
  • Multi-tenant isolation
  • Approval workflows and guardrails

The Solution

Kernel Service provides all of this as a platform. Your app exposes tool endpoints (simple REST APIs), and Kernel orchestrates AI agents that use those tools to accomplish objectives.

Key Concepts

Agents

An Agent is a persistent AI identity with a persona, objectives, and memory. Agents accumulate context across tasks and operate like an AI team member in your system.

Tasks

A Task is a unit of work submitted to an agent. “Qualify this lead”, “Draft a follow-up email”, “Research this company”. The orchestrator processes it through a ReAct loop.

Tools

Tools are REST endpoints your app exposes. Kernel calls them on behalf of agents. A tool can be “get lead details”, “draft an email”, or “book a meeting”.

Audit Trail

Every LLM reasoning step, every tool call, every token is recorded. You get full visibility into what the agent did, why, and how much it cost.
